OPINION. Most treaties include the sweeping language to provide ~ “health, education and social welfare” into perpetuity.  The 1855 Treaty with the Makah specifically referenced the obligation to vaccinate in the following language, “shall furnish medicine and advice to the sick, and shall vaccinate them…”

Opinion. Soon the coronavirus will have claimed the lives of 300,000 Americans due to the total incompetence of President Donald Trump, who has proven to be both a poor leader and a sore loser. He has done virtually nothing to curb the Covid-19 death rate since losing the presidential election. These tragic deaths will leave 300,000 empty seats around the tables across America this Christmas.

OPINION. The first name of the Trinity River is Hupa. It is our name, too. We are the Hoopa Valley Tribe. My people have lived on the Trinity River in northwest California for more than 10,000 years. We live in balance with nature sustained by the Trinity River and its resources. Our prayers and culture revolve around the health and well-being of our river.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — All Pueblo Council of Governors (APCG) convened our monthly meeting to prioritize pandemic response efforts as well as matters collectively important to the 20 Pueblos of New Mexico and Texas. Meanwhile, Pueblo leaders are heading into our annual time of transition amongst our individual Pueblos. Tribal leadership does this while simultaneously navigating critical ongoing discussions and decisions to ensure that the voices of our Tribal Nations are rightfully considered at the highest levels of government in our next administration.

OPINION. On December 31, 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an abnormal viral pneumonia in Wuhan, China. The cause of this pneumonia was later found to be a novel coronavirus dubbed COVID-19, leading to a global pandemic of historic proportions. Later, on February 26, 2020, the first U.S. confirmed case of non-travel associated COVID-19 was found in a California resident, with a second U.S. case of COVID-19 appearing two days later in the State of Washington.

Opinion. Donald Trump, along with his aiders and abettors such as Rudy Giuliani and legal team, perpetrating the false narrative that the 2020 presidential election was stolen by Democrats is doing a major disservice to democracy in the United States.

Guest Opinion. As Native people, we are all aware of the true story of Thanksgiving. We know that the quaint stories of Pilgrims and Indians sharing a friendly meal are nothing more than a whitewashed version of history that has been designed to hide the horrific truth that marked this country’s ignoble beginnings.

Historians know that turkey and corn were part of the first Thanksgiving, when Wampanoag peoples shared a harvest meal with the pilgrims of Plymouth plantation in Massachusetts. And traditional Native American farming practices tell us that squash and beans likely were part of that 1621 dinner too.

Most people in North America do not know it was Abraham Lincoln who created the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, in the midst of the Civil War, with hundreds of thousands dead. His proclamation creating the national holiday on the fourth Thursday of every November is more of a prayer, and was meant to unify a war-torn country.
