AKWESASNE, N.Y. — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is seeking applications from small businesses owned by tribal members who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tribe’s Office of Economic Development is offering grants to tribally registered businesses that have been in operation for a year or more. The funding can be used to “reimburse the costs of business interruption caused by required closures” stemming from the public health crisis, according to the agency.
“Small businesses are a vital part of the Akwesasne community and we are proud to be able to help them during their time of need,” Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Economic Development Director James Lazore said in a statement.
An earlier round of funding that closed July 24 supported 158 businesses to “offset costs associated with business interruptions” or reductions in services, according to Lazore.
In offering the small business relief grants, the tribe is leveraging funding it received as part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The funding is non-taxable, according to the tribe.
Eligible businesses must be owned by an enrolled tribal member and based within the portion of the Akwesasne nation that’s located in the United States. The small business relief program is open to gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants, bars, artists, craftspeople, professional services, retail operations and part-time vendors, according to the tribe.
Tribal members can only receive relief funding once.
Applications for the second round are due by 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 31. Additional details are available on the tribe’s website.
