Rep. Tom Cole Statement on Cherokee Nation Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives
Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, released the following statement after participating in the hearing in the committee held on Wednesday exploring the legal and procedural factors related to seating a Cherokee Nation Delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Today’s hearing marked an important first step in understanding the legal and procedural factors surrounding the issue of seating a delegate from the Cherokee Nation in the House. I certainly welcome the examination of this question in Congress,” Cole said. “The conversations started today importantly lay the groundwork for other committees of jurisdiction to study it further in the days ahead.”

U.S. Senate Passes a Resolution to Recognize November as Native Heritage Month
The month of November will be recognized by the Senate as National Native American Heritage Month thanks to a resolution introduced by Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). Schatz serves as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and Murkowski serves as vice-chair.
The resolution was a bipartisan effort cosigned by over twenty other Senators.
“In November we celebrate Native American Heritage Month to recognize American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian peoples and their unique cultures and contributions,” Sen. Schatz said. “I am honored to lead this year’s Senate resolution with Vice Chairman Murkowski and remain committed to upholding the federal trust responsibility and strengthening self-determination for Native communities across the country.”
