Opinion. Last Monday, Native News Online held its first ever Founder’s Circle meeting with donors to our publication. We invited members to a Zoom call where they could engage with me and members of our staff. Some 30 members signed on for a conversation about what’s going on in Indian Country.

Guest Opinion. The men and women working in police, fire and emergency services are who we call on to courageously respond first when there’s a crisis. They are our friends, family and neighbors who put their safety at risk to protect our entire community. We owe them our support, not only with words, but with tangible investments in the tools needed to do their jobs.

Guest Opinion. Navigating a complex health system can be difficult, especially for those living far away from their provider. Cherokee Nation is working hard to make it easier. Within the Cherokee Nation reservation, we have invested to make sure no Cherokee is more than a half-hour drive away from a clinic. Now, for Cherokee Nation citizens — particularly the many Cherokees living outside our 7,000-square-mile reservation in northeast Oklahoma — the new Patient Experience Team can ease the stress of getting care.

Opinion. The recent veto by Oklahoma Governor Kevn Stitt of a bill that protects the right of Native American students to wear tribal regalia and other cultural items during graduation ceremonies drew some raised eyebrows throughout Indian Country this past week.

Opinion. The wild buffalo of Yellowstone Country are being considered for Endangered Species Act protection. Their population is not doing well. But, it seems the native hunters who come to kill them don’t care — it’s all about us tribes and our treaties, not the buffalo.

Guest Opinion. For many young Cherokees, college is the doorway to realizing their dreams. It is the path to many different rewarding careers and ways to support a family. No young Cherokee who dreams of going to college should have to cancel those dreams because of the cost.

Opinion. The GOP-led House of Representatives last week passed the 2023 Limit, Save and Grow Act that would raise the debt limit, slash government spending and roll back key parts of the Biden administration’s agenda. The measure passed the House by a razor-thin margin of 217-215.

Guest Opinion. Nothing is more important to me as a husband, father and grandfather than protecting my family. That’s a value shared by most Cherokees everywhere. At the Cherokee Nation, we extend the value of family by working to protect all our citizens.

Guest Opinion. Cherokee Nation’s history is rich, but the details of our story are not well-known – even among our own citizens. We must be better informed. Our past informs our present in how we interact with each other, with other tribes, and even with the United States Government. In order to make informed decisions about where we are going, we must better understand where we came from.

GUEST OPINION.
Dear Justice Alito,
Like many Indigenous people in the United States, I watched the Supreme Court hearings on Brackeen v. Haaland live last November. This case essentially puts the federal Indian Child Welfare Act on trial.
