Guest Opinion. For over two decades, the opioid epidemic has plagued the Cherokee Nation Reservation. It has affected every facet of our tribe and society. Hundreds of Cherokee Nation citizens have died from overdoses. Tens of thousands more have suffered. It caused generational trauma and put the future of our nation at risk. Nearly a third of the opioids distributed in the state in recent years were shipped into Cherokee Nation, because irresponsible drug makers and distributors preyed on the rural communities across our reservation.

Opinion. It is common to pull into a parking lot of a restaurant or a hotel located on an Indian reservation and have a stray dog hanging around for some attention and maybe some food. These dogs are commonly referred to as reservation dogs.

Guest Opinion. For more than 160 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs organization has offered mentorship and support for youth. They have grown to serve local communities across the country, and they have long brought a special focus to youth living on Native lands. Today, Boys & Girls Clubs play a special role across the Cherokee Nation Reservation.

It was part of a yearlong tour in the second phase of the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative launched in June 2021 by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland (Laguna Pueblo).

Guest Opinion. Many decades before Oklahoma became a state, the Cherokee Nation was building public infrastructure on this land, ranging from roads and schools to the oldest public building in the state, the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court Building, which is now serving as a historical museum. But Cherokee Nation’s role in building essential infrastructure is not only our history. Across our 14-county reservation in northeast Oklahoma, we continue to build the infrastructure to serve Cherokees present and future.

Guest Opinion. January 16th is not only a day that asks us to pause and reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s. legacy, it also implores our nation to recognize and recommit to the basic foundation that the United States has held fast to for the last 247 years- that one person has the inherent right to add value to society through whatever means they find in themselves. Dr. King’s legacy reverberates throughout the nation and drives us all to reflect and address our moral consciousness, beyond what physically or spiritually is seen to the outside. This requires us to take that deep look into our own systems, whether ingrained or in-development and truly evaluate the content of our character and how that drives our actions and interactions towards and between one another.

Guest Opinion. I am extremely proud that one of the first bills that President Joe Biden signed into law in 2023 was the Durbin Feeling Native American Languages Act. This law, named after my friend and Cherokee National Treasure Durbin Feeling, will support Native language programs in Cherokee Nation and across the United States. It will boost our momentum to revitalize the Cherokee language that is central to our identity as a tribal nation.
