The Three Fires Confederacy is calling for Native Americans and allies to join them on Monday for the Labor Day Bridge Walk for Water. The event will begin in St. Ignace and end in Mackinaw City, Mich.

The purpose of the Walk for Water is to bring attention to the need to shut down Enbridge Line 5. Organizers say the walk is not a demonstration, but rather a ceremony.

“It is a water walk. It is a bridge walk,” a statement says.

Organizers are calling on their relatives throughout the Great Lakes — Native people who call these waters home in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Ontario — as well as allies and water protectors to stand with them.

Tribal leaders from Michigan’s 12 federally recognized tribes will participate in this historic event.

“It is an opportunity to honor our responsibility to the water and to remind the world that Anishinaabe people are still here, still protecting our homelands, and still carrying our responsibilities to the generations who come after us.”

THE MEETING POINTS

6:00 AM — Check-in & T-shirt pickup

Michigan Climate Action Network will have check-in booths at both ends of the bridge:

📍 North Side — Bridge View Park, St. Ignace

📍 South Side — Indian Pathways Park, Mackinaw City

Check in at either location and pick up your “Stop Line 5 Pipeline” T-shirt (megwetch for the shirt Bay Mills Indian Community!).

If you are not wearing traditional apparel, please wear the T-shirt during the walk. Our shirts are our signs.
