Michigan State Sen. Sean McCann won the Democratic primary in Michigan's 4th Congressional District on Tuesday and will face Republican incumbent Rep. Bill Huizenga in one of the state's most competitive U.S. House races this November.

Michigan State Sen. Sean McCann (Citizen Potawatomi Nation) won the Democratic primary Tuesday in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District, securing his party’s nomination to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga in the November 3 general election.
McCann declared victory Tuesday night, thanking supporters and positioning the race as a choice between his campaign’s focus on working families and what he characterized as Huizenga’s alignment with special interests.
“Our win tonight is thanks to every volunteer, supporter, and Michigan voter who put their trust in our campaign to bring change to Washington,” McCann said. “From the beginning, this campaign has been about standing up for working families and fighting back against corporate special interests and politicians getting rich while leaving our families behind.”
McCann said his campaign will now focus on appealing to voters across the political spectrum.
“Every day between now and November 3rd, I’ll keep working to win every vote – to unite Democrats, Republicans, and Independents who believe Southwest Michigan deserves better than Bill Huizenga, who doesn’t work for us because he’s working for himself,” he said.
A lifelong Michigander, McCann has served as a Kalamazoo city commissioner, state representative and currently represents the 19th Senate District in the Michigan Senate. Before serving in elected office, he worked with the American Red Cross on disaster relief efforts and has highlighted his record on economic development, tax relief for working families and housing issues during the campaign.
McCann has centered his congressional campaign on protecting Medicaid and access to health care, lowering costs for families, supporting small businesses, and defending abortion rights.
The race is expected to be one of Michigan’s most closely watched congressional contests this fall. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee included McCann on its “Red to Blue” list, identifying the 4th District as a top battleground in the fight for control of the U.S. House.
Michigan’s 4th Congressional District has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+3 and includes much of Southwest Michigan, including Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Holland, St. Joseph, Benton Harbor and parts of the Grand Rapids suburbs, including Ottawa County.
McCann enters the general election with endorsements from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten, former U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer, LIUNA Local 355, and more than 50 local elected officials and community leaders.
He will face incumbent Rep. Bill Huizenga, who is seeking another term representing Southwest Michigan in Congress.
