Indian Gaming Association (IGA) Chairman David Z. Bean took the organization’s message on the growing threat of illegal prediction-market gambling to Tulsa, Okla. on Thursday.
Joining Bean at the meeting was Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association Chairman Matthew Morgan at the University of Tulsa’s Lorton Performing Arts Center.
Bean delivered a forceful message to Oklahoma tribal leaders gathered for the United Indian Nations of Oklahoma quarterly meeting. Indian Country must remain united, engaged and relentless in protecting Tribal sovereignty and the legal foundation of Indian gaming, warned Bean.
FBI Puts Up Minimum of $25K Reward for Six Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Cases
According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, there are 4,200 unsolved violent cases in Indian Country, but advocates say that the actual number is likely much higher. In 2023, homicide was the fourth leading cause of death among Native men, and the sixth leading cause of death among Native women.
Cases receiving the reward money include: Angel Beach, Sa’wade Birdinground, Maleeka “Mollie” Boone, Logan Warrior Goings, Mary Johnson (Davis), and Emily Pike.
The six cases were designated in close collaboration with on-the-ground investigators working the cases, FBI Violent Crimes Section Chief Michael Peasley told Native News Online.
Sean McCann Vows to Oppose Enbridge Line 5 if Elected to Congress
The only Native American running for Congress in Michigan in this fall’s midterm election, State Sen. Sean McCann, the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s 4th Congressional District, says he has opposed Enbridge Line 5 since day one.
“In my role in Congress, I think [my position] is going to be much less favorable to Enbridge and its operations than you might see from the president of the United States or his allies in Congress,” McCann said during a press gaggle on Tuesday immediately following a town hall at the Women’s Club in Saugatuck, Mich.
Joining the town hall to lend support to McCann’s campaign were Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-MI). Scholten, who is serving her second term in Congress, represents the neighboring 3rd Congressional District, which includes Grand Rapids and Muskegon.
