Democratic nominee for New Mexico governor Deb Haaland (Laguna Pueblo) spent Labor Day weekend traveling across six counties in Northern New Mexico as part of her Roadrunnin’ Tour, meeting with residents and outlining her priorities for lowering costs and addressing issues facing working families.
Haaland’s weekend schedule included meet-and-greet events in Sapello, Clayton, Raton, Roy and Taos, as well as a Labor Day concert in Taos, a Labor Day celebration in Mora and the Wagon Mound Bean Day Parade.
The tour is part of Haaland’s effort to meet voters in their communities ahead of the November 3 general election. Her campaign has said she has traveled to all 33 counties in New Mexico during the campaign.
“I’ve traveled thousands of miles and it couldn’t be more clear – New Mexicans need someone who will fight for them in the Roundhouse, and I’m going to bring my experience to make life more affordable, improve education, make healthcare accessible, and build safer communities,” Haaland said. “There’s so much at stake in this election and I will bring the voices of New Mexicans to Santa Fe.”
During the Northern New Mexico tour, Haaland emphasized her campaign’s focus on affordability, education, public safety and healthcare.
She said she wants to lower costs by holding large corporations accountable. On education, she has proposed early reading interventions and expanding opportunities for students to pursue trades while still in school.
Haaland also outlined plans to improve public safety by providing law enforcement with additional tools while addressing what she describes as the root causes of crime.
On healthcare, Haaland has promoted a public option as part of her plan to expand access to care.
With the general election approaching, Haaland’s campaign is continuing to emphasize face-to-face conversations with New Mexicans as she presents her vision for the state.
