Native Vote 2026
Michael Garcia, mayor of Santa Fe, has endorsed Deb Haaland (Laguna Pueblo) in her bid to become the next governor of New Mexico.
In announcing his support, Garcia pointed to Haaland’s leadership and commitment to addressing key issues facing working families and communities across the state.
“From fighting to lower costs for working families to standing up for our communities and our values, Deb knows what it takes to tackle our challenges head-on. As Mayor of Santa Fe, I need a governor who will listen, lead with integrity, and deliver real results,” said Mayor Garcia. “That’s why I’m proud to support Deb Haaland for Governor — she’ll be a tireless champion for Santa Fe and for every corner of New Mexico.”
Garcia, a longtime advocate for affordable housing, previously served three terms on the Santa Fe City Council before being elected mayor. During his tenure as a councilor, he pushed for $3 million annually for the city’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund. His endorsement adds to a growing list of local leaders backing Haaland’s campaign.
Haaland welcomed the endorsement, emphasizing shared priorities around affordability and infrastructure.
“Mayor Garcia and I share a vision to help New Mexicans get ahead, make sure New Mexicans have a roof over their heads, and bring down prices. Under his leadership, he has worked to support affordable housing projects and modernize city infrastructure,” said Haaland. “I am honored to have Mayor Garcia’s trust, and I look forward to working with him and mayors across the state to create a more affordable New Mexico.”
Throughout her campaign, Haaland has traveled to all 33 counties in New Mexico, meeting with families, workers, and community leaders to hear their concerns and outline her vision for a safer, stronger, and healthier state. Her platform focuses on affordability, education, public safety, and healthcare.
Garcia joins several other New Mexico leaders who have endorsed Haaland, including Jack Torres, mayor of the Bernalillo; Marty Chavez, former mayor of Albuquerque; and Johana Bencomo of Las Cruces.
