MINNEAPOLIS — Community members, Indigenous leaders and advocacy groups plan to hold a public memorial Saturday in Powderhorn Park to honor the lives of Renee Good, Alex Pretti and others killed during federal immigration enforcement operations.

The ceremony, titled Wokiksuye – In Remembrance & Witness, will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday on the park’s soccer field, with gathering beginning at noon. Organizers say the event will offer space for mourning and reflection, with special care extended to people who have witnessed violence, loss or abductions involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agents.

Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the 19th keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe and Bundle, is scheduled to lead the memorial beginning at 1 p.m., followed by community singing, poetry and other remembrances, according to organizers. The word Wokiksuye is pronounced woh-GEEK-sue-yea.

Good, 37, was killed by an ICE agent during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis on Jan. 7. About two weeks later, on Jan. 24, federal agents fatally shot Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive-care nurse, during a protest and monitoring of federal immigration activity. Images and video from that incident drew widespread attention and criticism of enforcement tactics; his death has been officially ruled a homicide by the Hennepin County medical examiner.

The deaths of Good and Pretti have spurred demonstrations, vigils and national debate over the role and conduct of federal immigration agencies, including ongoing civil rights scrutiny.

Organizers of Saturday’s event include the Twin Cities community, the First Peoples of Mni Sóta Makoce, the NDN Collective and other local groups.
