EAGLE BUTTE, S.D. — The 12th Annual RedCan Invitational Graffiti Jam returns to the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation July 8-11, bringing nationally recognized artists, live performances and four days of community art activities to Eagle Butte. Hosted by the Cheyenne River Youth Project, the award-winning event is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday and Thursday, July 8-9, 11 featured muralists will create large-scale public art at locations across Eagle Butte, bringing Lakota stories, language and values to life. At the same time, volunteers from Ursuline College and the University of Missouri-St. Louis will offer free youth art activities outside 7th Generation Cinema, located at 19 F. Street.

On Wednesday evening, July 8, CRYP will welcome the public to its Waniyetu Wowapi (Winter Count) Art Park for a special live performance from American rapper and singer Murs, who will be participating in his first RedCan event. The performance begins at 6 p.m.

Activities shift to the art park on Friday and Saturday, July 10-11, where visitors can watch murals take shape while enjoying youth art activities, free spray painting, skateboard painting, hoop dancing classes, a poetry slam, games, community meals and live performances from Bazille, Reed Two Bulls and the Sampson Brothers.

Each day begins and ends with prayer, smudging and drum songs led by the Wakinyan Maza drum group. All are welcome to participate in the opening and closing circles, which take place outside the entrance to CRYP’s Cokata Wiconi (Center of Life) Teen Center.
