RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Sicangu Lakota Treaty Council (SLTC) from Rosebud, South Dakota and the International Indian Treaty Council of Tucson, Arizona are co-sponsoring the first ever Oceti Sakowin Treaty Conference on December 11-13, 2018 at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn in Rapid City, South Dakota
“One of our goals is to keep the Oceti Sakowin united and We’ve been thinking about the need for the Oceti Sakowin Treaty Council’s and tribal leaders to come together annually to get updated on the latest treaty encroachments on Treaty lands” says Phil Two Eagle, executive director, of SLTC. “There are so many treaty encroachments going on around our Sacred Black Hills such as gold and uranium mining, oil and gas projects, the pipelines, we must prepare ourselves to go to battle on these issues but we do need to strategize on how we are going to deal with these issues, so during this conference we will listen to our elders and experts and come up with a plan going forward.”
Organizers feel this gathering will be an excellent opportunity to update the Oceti Sakowin Oyate and see this event as a way to improve communications, share information, discuss important topics strengthen the Oceti Sakowin network, help identity key players in key issues, and it will be a great reunion for Oyate.
