OAKLAND –  For centuries, the Winnemem Wintu lived on salmon, as did numerous other tribes near the Pacific coast. The water in the rivers and streams where the salmon used to run is being diverted or dammed up and the salmon of the Pacific Northwest are almost gone. The elders of the tribes knew this day was coming and they spawned Pacific Northwest salmon in rivers with friends, allies and relations as far away as New Zealand.

A prayerful journey led by Chief Caleen Sisk of  the Winnemem Wintu Tribe to restore the salmon runs, protect the waters, and indigenous lifeways is taking place this week with events happening the whole month of September.

“We are days away from beginning our prayer journey upstream. We are calling on all of you who wish to join us to register so we can get a head count of our water protectors. Thank you to all of the people who are making this possible. Our prayers for the restoration of our salmon, the revitalization of our indigenous lifeways and the protection of our waters must continue until the salmon are restored and beyond. Let us carry out this prayer in a good way so we can wake up the state and our entire nation that it is time we take a stand for our water. We have nothing to lose,” says Chief Sisk.
