BEMIDJI, MINNESOTA – Marchello Cimmarusti, 40, plead guilty on Monday, April 18, 2016, to 2nd degree murder in the death of Rose Downwind in a district court in Bemidji, Minnesota.

Downwind was the granddaughter of Dennis Banks, co-founder of the American Indian Movement. Downwind was the daughter of Darla Banks, the daughter of Dennis Banks.

Cimmarusti is the father of three of Downwind’s children. Downwind was in an abusive relationship with Cimmarusti, who said in court today he “snapped” on the night he killed Downwind on October 20, 2015.

Cimmarusti and two accomplices removed Downwind’s body and drove to a remote area outside of Bemidji and buried her in a shallow grave, after the three men attempted to burn her body.

During the immediate aftermath of her slaying, the family and friends endured several weeks of not knowing Downwind’s whereabouts. She was last seen at a Target store in Bemidji on October 19, 2015.

Her body was not discovered until December 9, 2016 after Cimmarusti led law enforcement to her shallow grave.

In the plea deal made known today, Cimmarusti will be sentenced to 35 years in prison. He will be formally sentenced on October 28, 2016.
