WINDOW ROCK – The Office of the President and Vice President wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We believe the winter holidays are such an important time of the year for Diné to band together around the fire, the dinner table and the Christmas tree.

Priceless moments spent together have sustained us through the cold for centuries. Stories connect us with one another. Songs help us self-reflect. Games engender joy. Laughter kindles affection.

During the winter holidays, we would like to encourage everyone to put the phones away, close the laptops and turn off the television. Technology is a gift, but it can also deprive us of time better spent interacting with each other. Time better spent sharing stories, singing songs, playing games and laughing.

We ask that you join us in prayer to uplift our youth, elders, veterans andsoldiers. Let’s also take time to reflect on the current obstacles we face as a nation and as individuals. Think and pray about those who are struggling with grief, depression or alcoholism. Many are struggling to make ends meet and could use a helping hand. This is a time for us to reinforce K’é and the traditional teachings that strengthen our ability to survive and prosper with dignity.

As we celebrate this festive season, opportunities abound for us to instill generosity in our children. Christmas is not only about getting. It’s about giving too. What we can give is our time and attention to others. We can offer an extra hand in the kitchen, or outside with butchering or chopping wood. Small gestures of care are the fibers that bind communities and families.

We wish for everyone to have a safe and happy holiday season, free of drugs and alcohol. We hope you all have a chance to spend time with your family and share a bit of Christmas cheer in the presence and protection of loved ones.

On behalf of the Office of the President and Vice President, our families and those from the executive branch, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope that 2018 will be a peaceful, prosperous and healthy year for us all.

God Bless and Yá’át’ééh Késhmish,

President Russell Begaye

Vice President Jonathan Nez
