FARMINGTON, NEW MEXICO — College President Maggie George has been placed on administrative leave while the college’s board of regents investigates complaints against her, BOR Secretary Tommy Lewis Jr. confirmed Wednesday.
The action came after “a lengthy discussion on personnel matters” that occurred in executive session, Lewis said.
“Dr. George was placed on suspension for five days and after that our attorney will work with the board chair and human resources department to review various allegations of tension, disharmony and unfair treatment to see whether or not they’re real,” Lewis said, adding that George will be on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
Also at the meeting, Lewis said, new regent Greg Bigman was elected president of the board and Theresa Hatathlie was elected vice president, with Lewis as secretary and Nelson BeGaye as treasurer.
Bigman and Johnson Dennison had previously been appointed by Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye to replace Fannie Atcitty and Loretta Draper, staunch supporters of George who were serving on expired terms.
Vice President for Academic Affairs Martín Ahumada reportedly was appointed to fill in for George during her absence.
