Published January 6, 2017

EAGLE BUTTE, SOUTH DAKOTA — The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe is requesting volunteers to assist its efforts to locate 29-year-old Tom Traversie, Jr. who has been missing since Monday, January 2, 2017 in northern Dewey County, South Dakota.

The Cheyenne River Indian Reservation was hit with back-to-back storms during the past 10 days with blizzard conditions with drifting snow due to high winds.

Traversie was reported missing with his girlfriend, Megan High Bear, 23, whose body was recovered on Monday. Search efforts were hampered by drifted snow that blocked roads.

On Saturday, Dec. 31, Leonard Bagola, 54, a tribal member from Bear Creek who lives at the Manor in Eagle Butte, was found frozen behind the HV Johnson Cultural Center in Eagle Butte.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe has mobilized all emergency personnel available to the Tribe including outside Federal agencies and the Civil Air Patrol. Please contact the Tribal Emergency Operations Center located in the Game, Fish and Parks building at (605) 964-7812 for more information on how you can help.

Volunteers are asked to dress appropriately for extreme temperatures. Vehicles, equipment and food are needed to assist in the search.

If anyone has any information regarding the location or condition Tom Traversie please contact the Tribal Emergency Operations Center at (605) 964-7812.
