WASHINGTON — A tearful Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday called on Congress to cut funding to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because the agency is criminalizing Latinos in the United States. She said Latinos are descendants of Native people and the country is Native land.

The first-term New York Democrat is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. She is a Puerto Rican.

“We have to have respect for children, respect for families, respect for human rights and respect for the right of human mobility. Because it is a right. It is a right. Because we are standing on Native land, and Latino people are descendants of Native people,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And we cannot be told and criminalized simply for our identity or our status. Period.”

She says she will not vote for a dime to go to ICE.
