Principal Chief Bill John Baker
TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA-Bill John Baker has been reelected to a second term to serve as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, according to unofficial results from yesterday’s election.
The unofficial results show Baker garnered 53 percent of the votes cast. There are about 700 challenge votes still waiting to be counted, which should have minor impact on the outcome
Baker’s margin of victory was a drastic turn from four years ago when the election was too close to call, which ultimately resulted in a runoff election months later.
Baker prevailed over three challengers, who included former Principal Chief Chad Smith, who received 28 percent of the votes; Will Fourkiller with 10 percent and Charlie Soap who garnered nine percent.
