Like Father Like Son! Donald Trump Jr.’s Joking about American Indian Genocide is Totally Inexcusable

Donald Trump, Jr. thinks joking about the genocide of American Indians is funny. It is not.

Since the Donald Trump’s escalator ride down at Trump Tower in 2015 when he launched his run for president and his demeaning words about Mexico sending rapists and criminals across the border, America has been held hostage and in a downward spiral with insult after insult from Trump.

American Indians have had to live with his constant taunting of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) by calling her Pocahontas. Trump’s inappropriate usage of Pocahontas’ name is a constant insult to the legacy of the historic Pocahontas, who was far different than the submissive Disney cartoon character Pocahontas.

Trump likes to inject his mocking of Sen. Warren at political rallies across America. Even in the Oval Office, under a portrait of Andrew Jackson, who known as the “Indian killer” president because he was the one who set in motion the Trail of Tears that led to the deaths of thousands of tribal people along the way from America’s southeast to Oklahoma, Trump mocked Sen. Warren by referencing Pocahontas. The true intenion of the gathering was to honor the valor of Navajo Code Talkers who helped save democracy during World War II.

Unfortunately, his ignorant base thinks his mocking is appropriate and funny. It is not!

On Saturday, after Sen. Warren formally announced her candidacy for the 2020 presidential race, Trump tweeted: “Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President. Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!”

By capitalizing the word “trail,” many American Indians were highly—and rightfully so—offended by yet another insult that shows an absolute disregard for the disgusting and tragic treatment of this land’s first people.

Trump’s inappropriate behavior perpetuates more inappropriate behavoir. Soon after the president’s tweet, some right-winged media figure named Michael Malice tweeted:

“The Native American genocide continued with another murder by the president,”

That tweet caused Donald Trump, Jr. to praise his father. Like father, like son.

“Savage!!! Love my President,” Donald Trump Jr. posted on his Instagram page Saturday evening, which garnered over 48,000 likes.

Like father, like son. Donald Jr. apparently feels the genocide of millions of American Indians is a laughing matter. He thinks savage is a nice word?

Furthermore, one wonders whose murder was the Malice referencing: Was he referencing the deaths of the two indigenous children at the southern border of the United States while under the care of the Border Patrol?

Referencing the genocide of American Indian people by Trump, Jr. Is totally inexcusable. The killing of millions and in some cases the annihilation of certain tribes is not funny or a joke. It is pure evil.

The sad truth is no one will ever truly how many millions of indigenous peoples were killed since the arrival of Europeans. History estimates range from the low of 10 million and over 80 million.

The Trumps would better serve this nation if they took time to understand the wisdom handed down through the generations by Chief Plenty Coups of the great Crow Nation, who said: “The ground on which we stand is sacred ground. It is the dust and blood our ancestors.”

I think about the blood of our ancestors every time I hear or read the word genocide.

Every time I hear the word genocide, I think about the blood of our ancestors. And, it was not funny then and not now.
