NORMAN, OKLAHOMA – The pride of Indian country, Shoni & Jude Schimmel, will be play on national television Sunday at 4:00 pm, Sunday as their Louisville Cardinal women’s basketball team plays the University of Oklahoma in the Championship game of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).
The No.4/5 Cardinals advanced in the preseason WNIT after defeating No. 14/16 LSU 88-67 in the semifinals on Thursday night at the KFC Yum! Center.
The Louisville women’s basketball will face No. 11/13 Oklahoma in the Championship game of WNIT Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at the Lloyd Noble Center. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
The two Umatilla sisters won the hearts of many in Indian country as the Louisville team advanced to the NCAA Division 1 women’s basketball title game.
The Schimmel sisters are the only American Indians to ever play in a NCAA Division 1 basketball title game. They are tribal members of the Confederated Tribe of Umatilla Indians, based in Pendleton, Oregon.
Shoni Schimmel, No. 23, is a 5-9 senior. This year Shoni leads the team with 6.6 assists per game.
Jude Schimmel, No. 22, is a 5-6 junior. She is a guard.
Schimmel Sister to Sign Autographs
On Friday, Louisville women’s basketball team, Coach Jeff Walz, sent an email out announcing the team has allotted one hour after Sunday’s WNIT game for Shoni and Jude to sign autographs.
His email was to get word out to Indian country so that tribal citizens can meet the Schimmel sisters and get their autographs.
