Young Mother from Jemez Pueblo Falls to Death in Hiking Accident

ALBUQUERQUE—Deidre Tafoya (Jemez Pueblo), 26, fell to her death while in the Sandia Mountains hiking, near Albuquerque on Monday evening.

She was there with friends and two nieces when she fell 40 feet of the side of a cliff. The group climbed to the top of the Kiwanis Cabin in the Sandia Mountains, a hiking destination near Crest Trail.

Tafoya’s death was the first reported fall in Sandia Mountains this year. Her death was ruled accidental.

She is survived by three children who are two to nine years old.

Tafayo was from the Jemez Pueblo, but moved to Bernalillo two years ago.
