AUSTIN, Texas — Unlocking Silent Histories (USH) – a locally-based non-profit – equips indigenous youth with digital tools to illuminate, preserve, and share their languages, heritage, and stories of perseverance. This work connects indigenous communities across the Americas through shared experiences and provides audiences with an understanding of Native cultures and modernity through youth eyes. Austinites will soon have the chance to view some of these videos for themselves.
On November 15th, USH and the Austin Film Society Cinema will host Inspiring, Indigenous. Unlocking Youth Insights through Film. This fundraising event will include a screening of youth-produced films, testimonials from guest speakers who will emphasize the importance of digital storytelling, and insights from participating youth. Attendees have two event ticket options, $15 for General Admissions and $25 for VIP. Tickets will be on sale at the Austin Film Society’s website: https://www.austinfilm.org/, beginning October 15, 2019. All proceeds are tax-deductible donations that will support the organization’s continued efforts to amplify indigenous youth voices.
USH welcomes the Austin community and beyond to join us for an interactive event, sparking rich conversations on the topic. The organization would specifically like to take this opportunity to strengthen ties with the local Urban Indian/indigenous members of the Austin community to invite local perspectives in the future. Just as Texas connects two countries, USH envisions that Austin will connect indigenous peoples of the north and south, building understanding with others who live on indigenous lands.
