TAMPA— Umatilla citizen Jude Schimmel and the Louisville Cardinals women’s basketball team defeated the University of Southern Florida 60 -52 in an NCAA Tournament second round Monday night at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida.
The victory advances the Cardinals to the Sweet 16.
Senior Schimmel stepped up her game to ensure the victory for her Lady Cardinals as the Louisville went down by one point with some five minutes to play. She scored 13 points and four assists as she guided the play on the court. Eight of her 13 points came within the last three minutes of the game.
“Size, it’s just a number. You can’t measure a kid’s heart, okay, and her heart is as big as anybody’s out there,” said Louisville coach Jeff Walz of Schimmel, who is a 5-foot-6 guard.
”I knew that I had to be a leader,” Schimmel said. ”At that point we needed somebody to step up and I said `why not me?”’
Louisville (27-6) will face Dayton in the third round of 16 at Albany, New York on Saturday. It will be the Cardinals sixth Sweet 16 appearance.
