WASHINGTON – Representative Ryan Zinke (R-Montana) has been offered the position of secretary of the interior by President-elect Donald Trump. Zinke was elected to his second term to Congress in November beating Denise Juneau (Blackfeet Tribe), who ran as a Democrat.
Zinke is a former Navy SEAL commander and former quarterback at the University of Oregon, where he received a degree in geology.
He met with Trump on Monday. Up until then Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Washington) was reported to have been Trump’s choice to head the Interior department last Friday.
On Tuesday evening, McMorris Rodgers posted on her Facebook page the following statement:
“It was an honor to be invited to spend time with the President-elect, and I’m energized more than ever to continue leading in Congress as we think big, reimagine this government, and put people back at the center of it.”
The U.S. Department of the Interior houses Indian Affairs, which oversees the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Bureau of Indian Education.
