WASHINGTON – Donald J. Trump was elected president of the United States on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. When Trump assumes the presidency on January 20, 2017, Republicans will be in charge of the Executive Branch and Congress.
After a long night of waiting for election returns to come in, Trump’s victory was declared around 3:00 a.m. when he surpassed the 270 electoral votes required to win the presidency.
