IOWA CITY, IOWA — The Schimmel sisters – Shoni and Jude – are heading to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament after their No. 3 seed Louisville Cardinals beat the Iowa Hawkeyes 83-53 on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals are heading home to play in their home arena in Louisville Regional this coming Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville.

Combined, the Schimmel sisters had 36 points of the 83 points scored in the second round in Iowa City where the Hawkeyes played before a home crowd. The crowd was taken out of the game shortly after it began as the Louisville Cardinals put on a stellar performance on their way back to the Final Four.

Much of the game was televised on ESPN2 nationally. Unfortunately, ESPN2 switched to another game shortly after the second half began. Therefore, those watching in Indian country were unable to watch see the conclusion the tournament game.

The Schimmel sisters, who are tribal citizens of the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla, are favorites among American Indians across the country.

Senior Shoni Schimmel scored 26 points, provided seven assists and had five steals on the way to the Sweet Sixteen. She made 8 of 17 shots before being taken out of the game with 5:33 remaining in the game.

Junior Jude Schimmel added 10 points for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals next game will be on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. – EDT at the KFC Yum! Center against the Louisiana State University Tigers, which knocked off second-seeded West Virginia on the game ESPN2 switched to from the Louisville game.

Hopefully ESPN2 will decide to allow Indian country to watch the entire game on Sunday.
