ATLANTA — Umatilla tribal citizen Shoni Schimmel makes her WNBA rookie debut tonight as the Atlanta Dream take on the San Antonio Stars in season opener at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

The game will be televised beginning at 7:30 p.m. – EDT on the SportSouth cable channel and may be viewed online:

Schimmel is a guard and will wear #23, which is the same number she wore as the standout Louisville Cardinal. Her #23 jersey sold out in three days.

Schimmel was the Dream’s top draft pick this year. She was the number eight overall in the WBNA draft held in early April.

She ranks fifth in NCAA Division I history with 387 career three-pointers, just five off the record of 392. Schimmel led the Louisville Cardinals in scoring and assists in each of her last seasons. Her career point total ranks second in Louisville Cardinal history, trailing only teammate Angel McCoughtry’s 2,779 career points.

Schimmel was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Oklahoma City Regional in 2013 after leading Louisville past defending champion Baylor into the Final Four, where the Cardinals ultimately reached the national championship game. This year, she helped guide Louisville to the Elite Eight in 2014 while setting the school single-season record for threes (118), including a school-record nine in a game against Memphis.
