WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate today confirmed Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. He was confirmed by a 54-45 vote after the Republicans on Thursday voted to eliminate the 60-vote filibuster for high court nominees.

Friday’s vote fills the vacant seat on the Supreme Court that resulted with the death of  Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016.

The vacancy was prolonged after Republicans last year refused to grant a hearing or vote on Merrick Garland, who was nominated by President Barack Obama. The year-long-plus inactivity by Senate Republicans has caused bitter feelings among Democrats who felt President Obama’s nominee should have been acted upon as have all others in the history of the United States have been when a justice passed away in the last year of an president’s administration.
