Santa Fe Indian Market Announces SWAIA Fellowship Program

SWAIA’s fellowship program awards monetary support to Native Artists in four distinct categories

Santa Fe FellowSANTA FE — The Southwestern Association for Indian Artists (SWAIA) is pleased to announce the 2015 fellowship program for individual artists across a variety of mediums.  SWAIA awards artist fellowships in four designated categories.

The SWAIA Youth Fellowship, of which there are four awardees, is granted to young artists participating in the 2015 market. The award is intended to help young artists purchase supplies or to enhance the research or skills needed to execute an artistic project. Youth Fellows receive a $500 monetary award.

SWAIA’s Discovery Fellowship, awarded to two artists, is intended to aid artist’s investigation and inquiry into process and encourages experimentation beyond the artist’s primary form. The fellowship is open to both traditional and contemporary Native artists and is intended for material purchases, equipment, and to cover travel expenses. The Discovery Fellows are each awarded $3,500 and a complimentary booth at Indian Market.

The SWAIA Residency Fellowship is awarded to two awardees and provides a seven-week residency, providing both studio space and creative opportunities, in conjunction with 2015 Indian market week.  Residency Fellows receive a $2,000 monetary award and a complimentary booth at Indian Market.

Finally, the Design Collection Fellowship, is awarded to one artist, whose work will be used on an assortment of official 2015 Indian Market merchandise.  The Design Collection Fellow will receive, in addition to their arts inclusion on SWAIA’s official merchandise, a $1,500 monetary award and a complimentary booth at the 2015 Santa Fe Indian Market.

“Our mission is to promote Native fine art and provide opportunity through our events and programming.  The fellowships program is a tangible support mechanism where we recognize artists in all mediums and ages in an effort to assist them in their artistic growth and endeavors,” said Santa Fe Indian Market Chief Operating Officer, Dallin Maybee.

The deadline for all artist fellowships is Friday, May 29, 2015.
