PORTLAND, Ore. — The Grammy-winning group, Portugal. The Man released a new video, “Land Acknowledgement” on Thursday, February 7, 2019.
The video was done to honor the land of Indigenous peoples.
The group posted on its Facebook page this message:
“Recognize and respect! Honor the Indigenous Peoples of your home and everywhere else. Learn and remember the traditional name of the land you’re on and show respect and gratitude to the first people to call it home. Land Acknowledgment is just the first step. We have a long way to go. Love you all.”
Portugal. The Man won a Grammy Award in February 2018. In their acceptance speech, group members dedicated the prestigous award to the kids in the remote villages of Shishmaref, Barrow, and Bethel, Alaska.
They continued their vocal support of America’s Indigenous People throughout their 2018 tour by dedicating the opening portion of their set for performances and speeches by local tribal artists, tribal leaders, and activists. Hundreds of thousands of people heard these powerful and reaffirming Land Acknowledgements and sharing of culture.
