Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians Investigating Head Start Program

DOWAGIAC, MICHIGAN – The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians (Pokagon Band), based in Dowagiac, Michigan is conducting an investigation into activities the Pokagon Band Head Start. Local news agencies in southwest Michigan reported the investigation earlier this week.

The Pokagon Band Head Start is operated by the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan (ITC), based in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The ITC is locaed some 380 miles or almost six hours driving time away from Dowagiac, Michigan.

The type of investigation has not been disclosed by the Pokagon Band. Families with children in the Pokagon Band Head Start were sent the below letter, dated January 29, 2018 that indicates there is a new temporary director of the center.

The Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan operates a Head Start Center and Program in
Dowagiac, for which ITC leases a building and land from the Pokagon Band. The
Pokagon Band licenses this Head Start Program.

The Pokagon Band became aware of allegations involving the Head Start Center. The
Pokagon Band and ITC take such allegations extremely seriously. Both the Pokagon
Band and ITC are currently investigating these allegations. We don’t comment on open
investigations.
