Nurse Arrested in Rape of Native Woman in Vegetative State Who Gave Birth

PHOENIX  — The Phoenix Police Department announced on Wednesday morning a nurse, employed at the Hacienda Healthcare facility in Phoenix has been arrested in the rape of San Carlos Apache tribal woman who is in a vegetative state who gave birth in late December to baby boy.

Phoenix Police said Nathan Sutherland, a 36-year-old licensed practical nurse, was taken in custody on Tuesday after gaining a probable cause order. Sutherland, who has been employed at the facility since 2011 had responisibilty to provide care for the 29-year-old woman.

Sutherland’s DNA got a match with the DNA of the baby boy.

The woman, who Native News Online has identified because the family has requested privacy, has been in a vegetative state since age 3.
