Nizhoni Elementary School Safe after Shots Fired, Suspect in Custody

SHIPROCK, NEW MEXICO –  According to the Navajo Nation Police Department, shots were fired in the vicinity of Nizhoni Elementary School in Shiprock, New Mexico. Within minutes after being notified, officers from the Shiprock Police Department arrived on scene at approximately 3:00 p.m. and secured the area. There are no reported injuries.

The male suspect was apprehended and is now in custody. After being pointed out by witnesses, the officers made contact with the suspect who was walking near City Market. The suspect did not comply with the commands of the officers and is reported to have resisted arrest prompting the deployment of a Taser. A handgun was found in his possession.

During the incident, the school was placed on lockdown as a safety measure. The lockdown has since been lifted.

Officers are at the scene and continue to investigate.
