PHOENIX – Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye met with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in Phoenix after her rally at the Carl T. Hayden High School on Mondiay evening, Native News Online has learned. Secretary Clinton was in Phoenix for a last minute rally before today’s Arizona presidential primary.
President Begaye told Native News Online, the two discussed issues impacting Indian Country, such as the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and water rights.
“She showed a real interest to learn more about the issues in Indian Country. She already knows about some of them; I told her the federal government needs to properly fund VAWA,” says President Begaye. “I told her there are many ways the federal government needs to fund treaties in Indian Country.”
His meeting with Secretary Clinton was the second Democratic candidate within the past week he has met with. Last Thursday, he introduced Senator Bernie Sanders at the Twin Arrows Casino and Resort on the Navajo Nation.
Secretary Clinton will meet with tribal leaders in Washinton state later this week.
