WINDOW ROCK, ARIZONA — The Navajo Nation is mourning the loss of yet another Navajo Code Talker who has walked on. Sidney Bedoni walked on at the age of 91. His death is the second Code Talker to die within the past week. Last week, Chester Nez walked on and was laid to rest today at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
Mr. Bedoni fought as a Marine in World War II in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions. He was a Code Talker and a traditional Diné family man. Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly ordered flags at half-staff to honor, Sidney Bedoni, from sunrise on June 10 through sunset on June 13.“The Navajo Nation is greatly saddened by the loss of another warrior. Our Navajo Code Talkers are not only living treasures for our Nation, but for the U.S. as well,” President Shelly said. “We must do more to recognize their sacrifices in the name of freedom.”
Sidney Bedoni left boarding school in Flagstaff at age 16 and hitchhiked to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is a National Hero! Funeral services are scheduled next week in Winslow, with burial June 17 at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix.
