WASHINGTON — Native Vote week is set for September 24 – 29, 2018.
The reasons to vote far outnumber any reason not go to the polls. The fact that elected officials make decisions that impact the lives of American Indians and Alaska Natives is perhaps the most important reason to vote. Before you can vote, you must register to vote. With the general election coming up on November 6, 2018, there is still time to vote. Check with your secretary of state in your state to find out the process.
Native Vote works hard to get American Indians and Alaska Natives to vote in every election. Please watch the video to see the importance of voting.

Levi:
Thank you for republishing this encouragement to vote. Too many eligible voters neglect to vote and thus forfeit their right to influence public policy.
Those who sit out election day may have become cynical. They may have observed that many elected officials respond only to the powerful and influential and rarely to the needs and concerns of their constituents.
Unfortunately, that is not an inaccurate observation. Historians tell us that the practice of gerrymandering has been distorting incentives in our political life for many generations. The politicians’ party loyalties take precedence because once elected, they know that they, as incumbents, are unlikely to face meaningful challenge — except from primary insurgents in their own party.
Native News Online can help change that! Please tell your Michigan readers about Proposition 2.
If approved by the voters in November, Proposition 2 will create an independent citizens’ redistricting commission. The commission will be responsible for future re-drawing of electoral districts. The influence of political parties will be minimized, because the redistricting process will be fair, impartial, and transparent, responsive to genuine public input throughout the state.
I encourage you to assign a reporter to cover the movement to eliminate gerrymandering in Michigan. Please endorse Proposition 2 for the benefit of all Michigan citizens, especially those who are commonly overlooked, such as native Americans.
