TULSA – The Chickasaw Nation Native Explorers Program is now accepting applications for its 2017 college program. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2017.

The Native Explorers program offers guided exploration of the natural world to Native American college students. Participants will travel with a team of Native American research scientists, educators and physicians on a scientific and cultural expedition.

Applications are available to all eligible Native American college students. Eligibility requires a student to: be at least 18 years of age, be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe, have positive academic standing, have a high school diploma or equivalent and have a letter of reference from an academic instructor.

Activities will begin on the campus of Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences (OSU-CHS) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Students will analyze human anatomy by comparing diseased and normal organs.

Students will identify fossil remains, read maps and write field notes. Physicians and medical students will teach participants about healthy lifestyles and medicine. The on-campus activities will be followed by a scientific excursion.

Archeologists, geologists and biologists from the USDA Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management will introduce participants to protocols used for the management of natural resources and the preservation and protection of historic sites, as well as possible career opportunities and internships.

Students will also work side-by-side with Native research scientists from OSU-CHS, the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History and other natural history museums to learn about vertebrate paleontology and natural history.

The program will take place May 15-26. Students can apply online at
