PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATION — Rumors are rampant on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation after the brutal murder of Vinny Brewer III, 29, during the daylight hours on Sunday, October 16, 2016.

Brewer was beat up and then shot by occupants of two cars with Colorado plates that pulled up to a gymnasium parking lot near Pine Ridge Village on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Brewer had just finished playing basketball in a tournament and had gone outside with a cousin and his nephew.

The shooters were all dressed in black clothing and wore black masks to concealed their identities. The men dressed in black spoke with accents as they brandished semi-automatic weapons.

The cousin and nephew begged that no children would be shot. The pair were allowed to go back inside of the gymnasium.

Brewer was badly beaten, shot multiple times and then shot in the head.

Various tribal citizens who spoke with Native News Online said many people on the reservation feel the shooters are members of a Mexican drug cartel and there continues to be fear on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Brewer is the nephew to former Oglala Sioux Tribe President Bryan Brewer.

On Tuesday, the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety held a press conference and released the following statement to help ease  the rumors and fear on the reservation:

Good Afternoon Oyate! Due to the increase in violence in our communities and the shortage of officers there was a Press Conference held this morning to address concerns about safety in our communities. It seems there is some confusion out there on the message from the Chief of Police Mesteth, President Steele, and Attorney General Means, regarding the Press Conference this morning. For clarification sake:

  1. There is NO Martial Law being implemented on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
  2. The Oyate (People) are encouraged to CARRY ON WITH DAILY ACTIVITIES.
  3. Parents and Guardians need to follow Curfew hours for all minors (under the age of 18). That is 9:00 pm on school nights and 10:00 p.m. any other nights unless accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other person having physical charge of the minor or in attendance at or returning directly home from an organized school, church or Tribal or public function.
  4. The BIA has sent four officers to assist with coverage and will be sending additional officers soon.
  5. There is a lot of misinformation on social media.
  6. If you do have any information regarding criminal activities or information regarding pending investigations there will be an Anonymous TIP LINE set up later this week by the BIA and will be posted when set up.
  7. Meanwhile if you have any information you can call 605- 867-5111.

Times are hard Oyate, we need to work together towards safer communities.

The tip line was established and is: AUTOMATED ANONYMOUS TIP LINE: 1-888-668-0661.
