Leonard Peltier Supporters Want Trump to Set Him Free

WASHINGTON -With all the attention President Donald Trump is receiving about the recent pardons he has granted in recent months, longtime supporters of Leonard Peltier are now wondering why doesn’t the president free Leonard Peltier.

On Friday, Jodi Archambault-Gillette, former special assistant for Native American affairs to President Barack Obama, posted on her Facebook page: “Let’s ask Trump Free Leonard Peltier.”

Peltier, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, who is incarcerated at the U.S. Penitentiary in Coleman, Florida, for his 1977 conviction in connection with a shootout with U.S. government forces, where two FBI agents and one young American Indian lost their lives.

Leonard Peltier has been in prison for over 40 years

Peltier is considered a political prisoner of war by many, including celebrities, politicians and clergy. He has been incarcerated for over 42 years.

Over the past several months, American Indians have wondered if Trump hates the FBI so much, why doesn’t he free Leonard Peltier?

“All that would necessarily be needed is for the president to see that there was misconduct that’s been admitted” Sheridan Murphy, who is with the International Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, told a reporter recently. “If you look at the case from a presidential viewpoint, we’re hoping that (the president) can see that there’s questions, there’s a lot of questions about this case.”

Peltier’s current attorney David Frankel wrote a letter to the White House. In the letter he writes Peltier “has been subjected to a vicious campaign of fake news by the FBI.”  Frankel also cites the very poor health of Peltier, who is 73-years-old.

Concerning a pardon request to the president, Murphy says it is “certainly worth the effort” because he considers Trump a “wild card.” “You have no idea where he’s going to go. I wouldn’t have guessed that a visit from Kim Kardashian would relate to a pardon the next day…so, you never know.”
