COLEMAN, FLORIDA— Leonard Peltier, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, has been diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurism. Peltier is in need of surgery.

More will be known after a MRI is performed on Sunday.

Peltier is incarcerated at the U.S. Penitentiary in Coleman, Florida, for his 1977 conviction in connection with a shootout with U.S. government forces, where two FBI agents and one young American Indian lost their lives.

Peltier is 71 years old and has been in poor health for the past few years from complications with diabetes.

Peltier released the following statement on January 7, 2016:

“For months, if not at least a year now, I have been complaining about medical problems and that something is wrong with me… For the last few days, I have been on call out to go see the doctor.  Today, I was called again and had my blood pressure taken and gave more blood for more tests.

Apparently, they found what’s called Abdominal Aortic Aneurism (AAA) and it is at a very dangerous [stage]. If it bursts I can die. I will bleed to death. So they are going to rush me through some more tests, a MRI on Sunday, then find the right surgeon to do the operation.  The good news is [this surgery] has a high success rate… if nothing goes wrong.”

At this time, there are no further details. There is concern he may be placed in isolation during this time, as he awaits the outcome of the MRI and the surgery that is yet to be scheduled.
