BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA – A North Dakota  judge threw out a “riot charge” against journalist Amy Goodman today. On Friday, a North Dakota state prosecutor changed an original trespassing charge and decided to charge her with rioting in her role covering the Dakota Access pipeline land protector demonstration on Saturday, September 3, 2016.

Last Friday, October 14, State’s Attorney Ladd R. Erickson withdrew the trespassing charge and then charged her with rioting. The award-winning Democracy Now! journalist was there with a film crew recording the scene when the private security company hired by the Energy Transfer, the company that will own the pipeline, peppered sprayed and unleashed vicious dogs on the land protector participants.

“This is a complete vindication of my right as a journalist to cover the attack on the protesters, and of the public’s right to know what is happening with the Dakota Access pipeline,” said Goodman. “We will continue to report on this epic struggle of Native Americans and their non-Native allies taking on the fossil fuel industry and an increasingly militarized police in this time when climate change threatens the planet.”
