NEW YORK — Umatilla Jude Schimmel received a Top Ten College Women Award from Glamour Magazine at the Kaufman Music Center in New York on Thursday evening.
Schimmel, a junior guard with the Louisville Cardinals women’s basketball team, was among 1,000 women nominated to take part in the ceremony, which is based on things they achieved on campus. After a year of reviewing and pairing down applicants, 10 are chosen to spend a day in New York City.
The other winners are: Danielle Brooks (actress, Orange is the New Black), Greta Gerwing (actress and writer, Frances Ha), Gina Keatley (TV host, Healthy Soul with Gina Keatley), Dyllan McGee (Emmy award-winning documentarian), Shiza Shahid (CEO, the Malala Fund) and Colleen McGuinness (writer and producer, 30 Rock).
Schimmel was recognized for her leadership both on and off the basketball court.
Schimmel, a tribal citizen of the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla, has been a role model to Native youth throughout Indian country. Since beginning her collegiate career at Louisville, Jude has traveled to some 17 American Indian reservations in nine states, encouraging Native youth to develop and live their dreams. Last summer, she spoke to the UNITY conference about the importance of leadership.
This season Schimmel helped lead the Cardinals to a 33-5 record this season while averaging 5.6 points and 3.5 assists per game. She was a WBCA Good Works team nominee and won the Elite 89 academic award last season as the player with the highest grade-point average participating in the Final Four.
Schimmel and other Top Ten award winners will be profiled in Glamour’s May 2014 issue.
