George Edward Bennett (1924 – 2014)
PESHAWBESTOWN, MICHIGAN – To honor and celebrate the life of the late former Tribal Chairman George E. Bennett (Chairman 1996-2000), the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians will hold a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. on January 10, 2015 at the Leelanau Sands Casino Showroom in Peshawbestown, Michigan.
The day will begin with a tribal pipe ceremony at 8:00 a.m. at the Eagles Ridge Conference Center in Peshawbestown.
For the 1:00 p.m. Memorial Service at the Leelanau Sands Casino Showroom, speakers from various levels of government will be in attendance, sharing memories and thoughts about Chairman Bennett.

Michigan State senator Wayne Schmidt of the 37th District, State representative Larry Inman of the 104th District, Traverse City Mayor Michael Estes, and United States Coast Guard Traverse City Air Station Commander Capt. Sean Cross will be in attendance, among other representatives from local and state governments. The service will also include military honors by the Eagletown American Legion Post 120 and the Korean War Veterans Association of Northwestern Michigan – Chapter 38.
( Note: Doors open at noon for the Memorial Service.) A luncheon following the Memorial Service will be held at the Eagles Ridge Conference Center.
He was born on Sunday, December 9, 1928 in Howell, Mich. He started his journey on his 86th birthday, Tuesday, December 9, 2014 in Granite Falls, Minnesota. He was a leader and visionary, making the world a better place in which to live. George met his wife Lucille while both were actively working in civic Upper Sioux organizations in Minnesota.
Funeral services with Military Honors for George Bennett were held on Friday, December 12, 2014 at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home Chapel in Granite Falls, Minnesota.
