PEMBROKE, NORTH CAROLINA – Ashton Locklear, a tribal citizen of the Lumbee Tribe, will going to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She is the first American Indian to represent on the USA Women’s Gymnastic Team.
Last Sunday night, Locklear, 18, made team as an alternate.
Ashton has her plane ticket, but her parents, who are hard-working people (her father owns a small construction business and her mother formerly was emploed as a nurse, who volunteers at the gym where Ashton trains sweeping the floors and vacuuming) need financial assistance. Even though they are hard-workers, the costs associated with Ashton’s athletic pursuit to fulfill a dream to be an Olympian has a toll on their family savings.
Indian Country is being asked to help the parents get to Rio to witness their daughter’s dream coming true.
