Ex-Grand Traverse Band Employee Accused of Embezzling $233K from Tribe

GRAND RAPIDS – Michael Gerard Buchanan, who worked for 14 years with Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, based in Peshawbestown, Michigan, is accused of embezzling $233,176.72 from the Tribe.

Buchanan was named in felony information filed Monday, November 23, 2015 in U.S District Court, Western District of Michigan, in Grand Rapids. The filing was made by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff J. Davis.

Buchanan was the information technology director for the Grand Traverse Band from May 1998 through October 2012.

Monday’s filing indicates Buchanan used his position with the Tribe to purchase $233,176.12 worth of electronic equipment. He then sold the equipment and kept the proceeds for his personal use. The alleged theft occurred during most of his employment by the Tribe.

The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell. No date has been set for trial.
