OTTAWA—Stephen Harper was defeated by Justin Trudeau in his bid to retain his leadership as prime minister of Canada. In all, Harper served as prime minister for three terms and nine years. And, Mrs. Universe – Ashley Callingbull, a citizen of the Cree First Nations, is not complaining.

In the process of ruling Canada, Harper alienated First Nations citizens with his iron-hand style of leadership that led to the rise of the Idle No More movement in late 2012 that spread among First Nations. After the May 2011 Canadian federal election, Harper proposed several omnibus bills that led to the end of protection of waterways and forests on land occupied by First Nations citizens.

First Nation citizens throughout Canada were encouraged to vote against Harper’s Conservative party.

Within a week of winning her beauty Mrs. Universe title, Ashley Callingbull,  spoke out against the failed policies of the Harper administration as they relate to indigenous peoples in Canada. She has been interviewed numerous times about the election. She told Native News Online in early September she was disappointed in Harper’s failure to do anything about the missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada.
