Body of Missing Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Citizen Recovered from Deep Snow


Volunteers and family members recover body of missing tribal member after exhaustive month long search

EAGLE BUTTE, SOUTH DAKOTA — In early January, Tom Traversie, age 29, of White Horse, South Dakota had gone missing during a snow storm. Within 48 hours the body of Megan High Bear, age 23 of Eagle Butte, South Dakota had been found during the ensuing search.

Traverse’s body was recovered on Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

During the search, the e Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe mobilized every agency available to search. Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Police Department ran the search during a state of emergency caused by a major snow storm.

Outside agencies joined the search in the following days from Federal Agencies to local municipal agencies. Among the federal agencies were the Civil Air Patrol and Bureau of Indian Affairs while assistance also came from local governments such as Timber Lake search and rescue and private entities with search dogs.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe expressed deep sorrow for the Traversie family and extends its condolences. The tribe would also like to thank the following agencies for tirelessly assisting the family in the search: The Bigfoot Riders, Civil Air Patrol, United States Air Force, Timber Lake Search and Rescue, Brookings county Search and Rescue, Pennington County Search and Rescue, The Bureau of Indian Affairs, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, CRST Game, Fish and Parks, CRST Transportation and all the volunteers.
