1,000 Lakota Sioux Youth to Descend Upon Dakota Pipeline Protest Site
Published October 3, 2016
PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATION – 1,000 Young Native Americans from the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe are raising $100,000 to pay for the transport, tents, sleeping bags, and food needed for them to reach the pipeline protest site, according to One Spirit Native Progress.
The Standing Rock Lakota Sioux are taking a stand to protect the water, the land, and their heritage threatened by the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The construction led by Energy Transfer Inc. has already destroyed ancient burial sites, prayer grounds, and sacred artifacts. The Standing Rock Lakota have been joined by members of 280 other tribes, and the youth from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation want to join their elders and stand with them.
Not only would this strengthen the #NODAPL movement, it could also be a turning point in stopping the epidemic of youth suicide on the reservation. If you’re wondering why so many teens are choosing to end their own life, look at these numbers:
- 97% of the population at Pine Ridge Reservation live below federal poverty line.
- The unemployment rate on the Reservation vacillates between 85% and 95%.
- The median income on the Pine Ridge Reservation is less than $3,500 PER YEAR.
- 75% of the youth drop out of school.
- At least 60% of the homes are without water, electricity, insulation, or sewage systems.
- The Pine Ridge Reservation has the shortest life expectancy of any community in the Western Hemisphere outside Haiti. It’s a third-world situation right in America’s back yard.
Despite these difficult conditions, Lakota youth are determined to support their people, make an impact, and be part of the history that Native tribes are creating right now. Many Oglala Lakota have already played a key part in the pipeline opposition. Most of the youth have been supporting their elders from afar until now, but they are determined to reach the protest site to lend their voice to the movement in person. They are more than their circumstances, and they are determined to prove it.

Great idea, go for it.
I am so glad you are doing this. How do I contribute? Someone has to care for the earth….she is crying in pain.
They are being a driving force in this by bringing their energy and positive spirits to the camps. Be sure to help your elders and younger children as well.
BE SAFE AND BE AS STRONG AS YOU WERE BORN TO BE.
All those problems, and Leonard Peltier is still in Prison! These young people could use all the support from their Elders that are still here!
These people are the hope of the world. Bless them and send our prayers with them. This is a holy cause that may yet save our mother Earth and our children’s home for many generations. All our relations!
how far are they traveling?
I am so impressed to see these young people who have been given less than nothing and have had to fight for any little thing they have but are still leading the charge forward for all of us! And still have respect for their elders as well! They deserve much more than they’ve had and I hope going and being with their elders gives them either a renewed or even a first time look at hope and possibility! I hope not just “my” gods…not just “their” gods but instead ALL GODS watch over these courageous young people and those who will teach them.
Aho…. I believe the youth will be th we change. Bless each & every one of them!!!
So proud of you for standing up for what is right!
A noble cause. But there are issues. Specifically the weather…Winter in ND.
The tents & sleeping bags need to be rated for winter & the price tag goes through the roof.
A good expedition rated -35 degree sleeping bag. 2 man, 4 man tents or large military tactical tents ready to accommodate heating systems, wood, kerosene or propane. Are not cheap.
The positive coming from this is people nation…world-wide are becoming aware of the TOTAL injustice…and GREED that is going on in our own backyard. I believe that tremendous good is going to come from all of this. The statistics are alarmingly pathetic!
We are all with you in spirit and prayers i give asema’.This has been long over do.Migwech
We in Texas support you! We’ve got our own pipeline in ‘sacred’ places. We are one.
WITH YOU IN SPIRIT!! These horrible evil doers will see the end of their days, and we are standing together in the world against them. We are with you in courage, in pain and in the victory ahead!! We are one!!
I truly support all of you protecting your and our water and mother earth in general. I keep praying for all of you fighting against DAPL. Stay strong and show America what is truly important for the people. And just continue as peacefully as you are.
Best wishes and prayers from Germany!
the US indigenous peoples are worse off then OURs here in Canada. No wonder the US is supportive of Israel in their dealings with Palestine, they have it down to a fine art
Sorry for my ignorance, can someone tell me what happens with all the money generated by the casinos? The money that SHOULD have been invested over the years in places like Pine Ridge Reservation where the cited social statistics are awful. Where the need is for real education, adequate housing, ready medical care, and other social services.
It makes you feel so proud that the youth from the Lakota Tribe, or riding to join you. Doing what you can to help, riding for what’s right. Your Family, Friends and Ancestor’s are very proud of you.
Thank you for your efforts. We see you and hear you here in Kentucky, the land of the bloody Earth. My God, our God the God of Moses hears your prayers No more Trails of Tears and No more Pipeline!
I would be there if I still had a horse to put under me. With you in spirit! Battle on for all of us and our coming generations! This makes my heart sing! A 500-year moment of truth is upon us.

Protestors urge Obama to stop Dakota Access pipeline
A Native American protest may be growing into a national movement.
…
“But Energy Transfer Partners is unlikely to back down despite the opposition. For one, the line is nearly 60 percent complete and construction continues across most of the privately-owned land under state jurisdiction. It also has the backing of labor unions in various states and many supporters who tout thousands of jobs and millions in tax revenue…”
BULLSHIT! KXL showed there ARE NOT jobs or taxes once the pipeline is completed. AND NO ESCROW ACCOUNT REQUIRED TO PAY FOR SPILL CLEANUP!

As all is energy, what I noticed is the Youth AGAINST, that in itself is a warring energy.
Suggestion if I may, change it to FOR.
Blessings
FOR the people, land, water, generations.
Keep your strong hold, we love you from Canada . don’t let them get the best of you, don’t be frustrated stand, strong fight on. they keep raping mother earth and have some of our people following in their shoes not our moccasins. when did the mighty dollar convince you to take your dignity modesty ,respect and just thtrow it away , when did we become a nation where we turn the other cheek on our own children you are . a greedy people all that matters to you is money!!!
I don’t know if this is right place to present this?
If (IF) you are protesting and you KNOW dogs will be turned on you…
Wear thick long sleeves and leggings and HEAVILY coat your clothing with cayenne pepper. Under those clothings wrap your arms and legs with plastic to protect you from irritation by the pepper. This will shut the dogs down without the handlers knowing why.

My best to you all and your peaceful ways.
Do not give up! Try to convince this company there are other ways to transport oil without putting your land at risk. I agree with Audrey Crowe in the fact we do need to find and produce other sources of energy such as solar to power vehicles and our homes. Not all Americans are greedy and there are some of os left who care about caring for the planet and the interest of others. Hopefully the company will realize this before it’s too late.
